Linux too bloated for $100 Laptop

The One Laptop Per Child organization will use Linux on its inexpensive machines, but apparently the OS suffers the same code bloat as Windows, the project's leader said Tuesday.

Depends on what kind of bloat you say Linux has...in a sense it does have some of that, out of the box, but this largely depends on the system, from my exprences there is little bloat in the Linux kernel, and works good with a decent speced machine, and evren ok with an older machine.

Compress MS Office 430MB ISO to 1.4MB with KGB Archiver

KGB Archiver is the compression tool with an unbelievable high compression rate. Unfortunately although it has a powerful compression rate, it also has high hardware requirements.

It can compress a 430MB MS Office ISO to a 1.4MB file, which is small enough to fit on a floppy disk. (If you don't believe me see comments for link to the archive)

This is neat....the only problem is to achieve this, you need a very powerful computer to compress it to that size...and alot of ram :(.

Adults Spend More Time Gaming than Teens

At a recent study by Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) shows that adults spend more time playing games than teens, which is startling (to some degree).

I'm suprised about this also....

"The fact that adults are racking up more gaming hours than teens is startling, but there are several associated findings that shed light on this," said CEA's Senior Manager, Industry Analysis Steve Koenig. "Interestingly, a greater percentage of 12-14 year olds spend time gaming than older teens ages 15-17. Older teens simply may not have the free time for extra hours of gaming or they could be gaming on wireless handsets since 81 percent of teens own or use a wireless phone."

This may contribute to why people my age don't play as many games. There is also the things that people my age seem to do alot of Sports, and Extra curricular activites..(I.E Band, Orchestra). I still though find time to play some BF2 and other games :).

I don't think I would cancel that land line yet !!

I still dont think VoIP is ready at all for a dedicated line. It is still wise to have a landline, for the fact that 911 is still reliable with that. VoIP is good as a second line, if needed, which is cheaper, for regular calls, but is still not reliable with 911 yet.

STARTING at $9930, the PC has a Pentium Extreme Edition processor that has been overclocked from 3.73 to 4.26 GHz, 2GB DDR2-667 memory, a 160 GB 10,000 RPM WD Raptor as well as a second WD 400 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. PC also comes with a FOUR GeForce 7900 GTX graphics processors with a total of 2 GB of GDDR3 memory.

Now this is an EXPENSIVE machine. Its got every high end part that is out today, even a physics chip (that no game, I think supports). This, at least right now, is one of the most expensive computers that any one person would buy (except the Power-Mac Quad-Core, in a full configuration).

Linux gets built-in Cell processor support

"Linus Torvalds released a new Linux kernel on Monday that supports features in IBM's Cell processor, includes Oracle software for clustered databases and improves how the open-source operating system runs on multiprocessor systems." (taken from article)

It seems that this kernel release mostly focuced on adding features and support for very high end chips, like the Cell, and there outlying file systems, as well as other multiprocessor systems. This is good for them, but there was no mention of other features. What I waas hoping for the mentioning of mabe some improvement in wireless support, or something like that....

Microsoft has delayed the release of its forthcoming Windows Vista operating system to 2007.

Now this was not expected, I definatley thought it would release this year. This move by Microsoft, ironically annouceing it after the stock-market closed today, is going to effect quite a bit. With them delaying Vista, the pc market may loose profit from this, this also may effect the next generation graphics chipsets, which depend on DirectX-10, and possibly delay them. Its definatley safe now to buy a new computer, thinking that vista wont be comming around for another year, mabe a year and a half.

Analyst: Apple's 60-gig iPod 'at risk'

Apple may be phasing out its 60-gigabyte Video iPod, according to one analyst who tracks the company. He believes this could mean the company is readying a wide-screen video iPod with Bluetooth headphones that could be ready as early as the June quarter.

This makes some sense, because the 60 gig iPod was never that popular, only the people who really had alot of songs would really use it. But that portion of the market will be upset by this, because of the fact that they MIGHT not make them. If this happens, this will be a blow to Apple, becasue other companies could take the place of a high capacity mp3 player away from Apple...

Microsoft finally enables OpenGL Windows Vista support

News has now been leaked that Microsoft has enabled support for OpenGL to work with the Windows Vista compositing desktop, as of the most recent preview build. Previously Microsoft's plan had been force OpenGL to be translated to Direct3D, reducing performance by 50% and locking the OpenGL version to 1.4 only.

No more PS2

Reports are trickling through this evening that Sony has indeed lost its patent case against Immersion technologies and will be forced to halt sales of its PS2 console.

This isn't good for Sony, if they have to pull out all of there PS2 consoles, then they will suffer a major profit loss. I do not think the PS3 is effected because it is of a different design, but there is a possiblity that they may have to change the design of the controller because of this..I think...

Apple has images of burned Macbook Magsafe connector removed

Fedora Core 5 Preview

Fedora Core 5 (FC5) is slated for release next week.

It seems that from the article, that they don't recommend Fedora for new users, though I have used Fedroa Cores 3 and 4 and Fedora is a decent distribution, though what is annoying is that the many important features like mp3 and Sun Java arn't in there, or that network pc card that works in Ubuntu, doesn't work at all in Fedora Core 4. Even with those issues, Fedora is one of those "Top" distros that I would recommend, though Ubuntu I would recommend more highly, then mabe SuSE, then Mandrivia (AKA Mandrake) then Fedora in order of simplicity.
